By workflow we mean the passing of information from one job role or stage in the business process to another in a timely and automated fashion.

This may take the form of prompting the next stage in a process, for example transferring order details to an MRP record and then into a purchasing requirement in the Purchasing system. Alternatively automation may involve more routine administrative tasks such as reporting, document management or e-mailing.

Such automation can be effected between RTIS and non-RTIS systems, and these would typically include accounting systems. Other programs can be controlled through the Windows API in order to effect links in information flow and task prompting.

The overall approach is to reduce the time it takes to effect a process by removing the need for dual data entry and by prompting or automating the next action in that process.
