RTIS Resource Manager
The resource manager is a database application designed for the voluntary sector. It allows organisations to track the availability of resources of different kinds in much the same way as a library would. At its heart lies a desktop application which allows users to maintain resource and lending details and interrogate the data using the RTIS List Browser.
The application is also web enabled. Different organisations can share their resources by uploading the data on their own desktop application to the internet. Remote users can then interrogate these shared resources via the www. Where these resources are electronically stored (such as documents), enquirers can download them.
The shared data available via the www is held on the RTIS server, and a search engine is provided to interrogate the database. The scripting (we use php) used to query the database works as a template so that you can incorporate it easily into your own HTML code - allowing users to place it within their own web design if necessary.
In this way organisations with similar resources can make their data available to a shared audience without diverting from the normal everyday use of their own desktop application. This approach is currently in use in South American community organisations, but could also be used in a commercial environment over the internet or perhaps a corporate intranet, with departmental sharing of data.
